Student receives Holy Communion during Mass

Sacraments

Sacraments are visible signs of Christ’s invisible grace, given to nourish our faith and draw us closer to God. They are not just ceremonies, but moments where God is believed to be actively at work in a person’s life.

Building a Strong Foundation of Faith

SVdP students receive special preparation for the sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation. Mini-retreats, special projects, and service hours are some of the elements used to help deepen student understanding of the sacraments.

Reconciliation

The Sacrament of Reconciliation offers Catholics the opportunity to receive God’s forgiveness and be reconciled with the Church. Through this sacrament, Jesus Christ extends His mercy by working through the priest, who prays for forgiveness on behalf of the penitent. Reconciliation is a sacrament of healing, restoring the individual to peace with God and the Church community.

Eucharist

The Holy Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life, uniting all the sacraments and the life of the Church around Christ Himself. The Sacrament of First Eucharist is a joyful and sacred milestone in the life of a Catholic. In this sacrament, children receive the Eucharist for the first time, encountering Jesus Christ’s true presence in the body and blood in Holy Communion. Children who were baptized Catholic normally receive this sacrament in the second grade.

Confirmation

The Sacrament of Confirmation strengthens the baptized with the special gift of the Holy Spirit, uniting them more fully to the Catholic Church. Through Confirmation, we are drawn closer to Jesus Christ, enriched with the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and called to live as faithful witnesses of our faith within the Church and the world. Children who were baptized Catholic normally receive confirmation in the eighth grade.
